El Nuevo Día: Civil Society Driven Economic Development, Puerto Rican groups bet on social enterprise

Panelists included Laura Cantero, from Grupo Guayacán; Miguel Columna, from ConPRmetidos; Denisse Rodríguez, from Foundation for Puerto Rico; and Steve Vetter, from Partners of the Americas. Over 100 people attended the event, titled “Puerto Rico: Social Innovation Solutions in the Midst of Financial Crisis.”
Concrete initiatives from each group were discussed, including: Campus Puerto Rico, an initiative to promote the Island as a unique educational destiny (a collaboration of Partners of the Americas with the Foundation for Puerto Rico and the Commonwealth’s State Department); Puerto Rico Global, spearheaded by ConPRmetidos to engage the Diaspora in the Island’s economic development strategies; Foundation for Puerto Rico’s successful Kiva Zip peer-to-peer lending and its co-working space/incubator “el Colaboratorio;” Grupo Guayacán’s start-up competitions and private equity initiatives; and other topics.
